japanese fruits
a coupla discoveries while wandering in meidi-ya.

1. japanese honeydew melons cost a whopping 79bux each.

2. japanese strawberries are four times the size, four times the redness and four times the price of the usual punnets from other countries. quite reasonable really.

still don't understand what's with the melons.

Them melons
I understand from a friend that they cost even more (S$50 per slice) when served in a Jap restaurant.

This friend found out the hard way, when he was dining a la carte at the Jap restaurant in Fort Canning with his fiance (now wife) and they were each served with a slice of what he called the juiciest, sweetest, crunchiest honeydew he ever had.

They both loved it. He asked for another slice. At the corner of his eye, he saw the cashier ring up a bill for S$795 for another diner, so he asked how much was the slice. After he found out, they decided to do without.

I think these fruits are genetically engineered and grown in a high-maintenance environment. Also, the freshest ones are airflown to SG and the price of the airfare is factored in.

Re: Them melons

i was thinking maybe they employ people to stand there and talk to the melons as they're growing, so they absorb good vibes!

if a slice is 50bux, i guess 79bux for a whole melon doesn't seem that bad. :)
