blast from the past
no, this is not a post about ex-boyfriends. sorry to disappoint! :P

those big, round wafer-biscuits were my absolute favourites! i must have been about 5 years old. whenever i followed mother to the provision shop, i would stand in front of the hugeass biscuit tin and eyeball these colourful bikkies until mother bought me one. one biscuit for 10 cents. :)

how many of youse have eaten any of the above as a kiddo?

:)

The memories!! :D

I've never had those wafer biscuits before, loved the jellyfish in pri school... and the ding dang sweets we used to get from the guy who sells them at the bus terminal ;)

Speaking of malted sweets, I wonder if the old granny who sells the malt candy is still there in Holland V.

i love the ding dang sweets too! only thing is, mother called them ding ding sweets! because the sound goes, "ding ding..." :P

those malt candies which are all melty and droopy are much nicer than the ones i found here. you twirl them on a pair of wooden chopsticks and bite off as much as you want!

didn't see any old lady in HV selling malt candy. when did you last see her? if it was a long time ago, i doubt she's still err around? :P
.that girl.: let's share a secretgirlwhowaits on August 4th, 2006 11:18 am (UTC)
2 years ago was the last time :P

Nah everytime someone mentions malt candy I think of her - she has the best home made stuff. And I could never walk past her without buying at least one stick.

As for the ding ding sweet - we used to buy bags of the stuff if we saw him on our way to school (when we were in the arvo sesh).

The joys of sweets in childhood ;)

:D I LOVE THOSE BIG WAFER BISCUITS! :D One of my favourites.. Haha.. But it's been sucha long time since I had them :(

Malt candy is the best! It's nicer after you keep twirling it till it's white! My school was selling it on Racial Harmony Day.. Which was last last week... And I spent more than an hour to make it half of the white it should be. My ex-classmate's mum can twirl the thing white in less than 20 minutes! :O
JVdrag0nette on August 4th, 2006 12:41 pm (UTC)
really? must twirl until white? :) i always eat them too fast!

some oldskool neighbourhood confectionery shops still sell the biscuits. they come in a huge packet now. i bought all these recently!
Crystal Hengcrystalheng on August 5th, 2006 11:06 am (UTC)
It's not a must lah.. But it tastes nicer after twirling it white, somehow... Haha

Shall buy the biscuits soon! :D Haven't had them for eons... Haha

hee. yes, these are very localised, neighbourhood treats which most singaporean kids growing up in the 70's and 80's would be familiar with. :) you have malt candies too! were they from an asian store?
