got a dumbass reply from them:

Dear jessicaval,

The system works the same as before, it just looks a little different.
Your image will only be resized upon upload if it is larger than what is set
in the 'Uploading Options'(below the blue upload box); if you choose the
largest option, you should encounter no problems. We apologize for any
confusion this may have caused.

Thank you!

Your Photobucket Support Team

i should encounter no problems? well, i AM and i HAVE BEEN and are you people stupid or what? if you read my mail carefully, the dimensions of my pixels ARE OBVIOUSLY longer than your current settings and OBVIOUSLY i'm being resized! because OBVIOUSLY even your largest option is a fuckin short pea-brained option! why the fuck are you people restricting pixel lengths instead of file sizes???

ok, i did coat the above in tact before sending it.

[something] is being done! thank you, dublindog for posting it below. :) this restores some of my faith in photobucket. :) at least they're listening.

Re: I noticed photobucket must have heard you

thank heavens for that! :) at least my angst didn't go to waste. i admit that though i did apply a layer of tact, my mails to them carried a strong tone of "WTF".

thank you very much for posting this comment! :)

ps. i think alex made a mistake clarifying the issue with the 1000x300 image. i hope he meant 300x1000...
